![]() ![]() The Comanche’s did not arrive on the South Plains as a united group of people but rather in numerous family groups, tribes, and bands. They branded themselves as the Nermernuh, or “the People.” The band structure of Comanche society Although the tribe came to be known historically as the Comanche’s, they actually called themselves differently. ![]() Only after they arrived on the Southern Great Plains did the tribe come to be known as the Comanche’s, a name derived from the Ute word Komántcia, which means “enemy.”The Spanish colonizers in Mexico, who were the first to come into direct contact with the fierce Comanches in the early 18 th century, were the ones that gave the tribe the name with which they were known by Spaniards and the Native Americans. Pressure from more powerful and better-armed tribes to the north and east, principally the Blackfoot and Crow Indians, also encouraged their migration.Ī vast area of the Great Plains, including the majority of North, Central, and West Texas, soon became Comanche country or Comanchería. ![]() The move also assisted the acquisition of French trade goods, including guns through exchange with the Wichita Indians on the Red River. The warm climate and abundance of buffalo were additional reasons for the southern migration. After their arrival on the Great Plains, the Comanche’s began a sudden migration that was inspired by a combination of purposes.īy moving south, they had greater access to the Mustangs of the Southwest. In Comanche Indian Way of Living standard, Comanche’s were known to be very fierce and powerful warriors. Their new asset has allowed them to abandon their original home and their Shoshone neighbors and move down to the plains of eastern Colorado and western Kansas, where opportunities for them were plentiful. The life of the Comanche tribe was revolutionized as they evolved into a mounted, well-equipped, and powerful people. That acquisition significantly changed and improved their culture. Sometime during the late 17 th century, the Comanche people have learned to domesticate horses. The Comanche language is derived from the Uto-Aztecan linguistic family and is virtually similar to the language of the Northern Shoshones. ![]()
